The Fw 190 quickly proved to be a formidably opponent for Allied aircraft. Its most numerous variant - the Fw 190 A-8 - was powered by a BMW 801 14 cylinder air-cooled radial engine that produced nearly 1,700 hp and allowed the aircraft to travel at over 400 mph. In terms of armament, it carried four 20 mm cannons and two 13 mm machine guns.

The Fw 190 was introduced on the Western Front in August 1941. For the first few months of its combat career, the Allies, entirely unaware of the new fighter, attributed pilots' reports of a new "radial-engine fighter" to Curtiss P-36 Mohawks which the Germans had captured from the French. The new fighter outperformed the Spitfire Mk.

The Fw 190 was on its back, with little airspeed. The sudden change in torque hurled the aircraft into a spin. Tank's artificial horizon toppled (the cause is not explained). Although Tank did not know whether he was in an upright or inverted spin, he managed to recover after a loss of altitude.

Imperial War Museum has a Fw 190A-8/R6, Werknummer 733 682. This aircraft was which "pure" fighter. It's initial operational career is not documented, but what we know is that it was later assigned to IV./KG200 where it flew as a top component of a Mistel S-3B (with Junkers Ju 88H-1).

It was Germany's last piston-driven fighter of World War II, a powerful machine that gave immense grief to American bombers over the skies of the Reich, as one of the Luftwaffe's most dependable aircraft. The Fw-190 owed its origins to a pre-war competition run by the German Air Ministry for new fighters to equip the equally new Luftwaffe in 1934.
