In 2002, David Backhouse was chosen as the sculptor of a memorial to animals used by British forces in wartime, a £1 million fund campaign being launched by the novelist Jilly Cooper. Supported by the Animals in War Memorial Fund and sited at Brook Gate, Park Lane, on the edge of Hyde Park, the design featured two heavily laden, lifesize mules.

As well as being a member of the Royal West of England Academy, David Backhouse is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He is a member of The Fountain Society and the Society of Equestrian Artists.
